Question for the Week

Here’s the question for the week —

Why do we pray before meals?

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t pray before meals. But what makes a meal any more special than waking up in the morning, going for a bike ride, driving to work, etc.? Is the prayer for a meal a ritual or is there a special purpose there?

Your thought?

  1. Showing appreciation to God, I suppose.

Meats that are sanctified by prayer and thanks?

  2. Kevin, where are you? Are you travelling again? I miss Tacky Tuesdays…

  3. Off the top of my head, my guess is that the practice is modeled after the accounts where Jesus gave thanks for/blessed food before it was consumed, eg. feeding the multitude and the Last Supper.

It seems a little more logical to me, though, to thank someone after receiving/enjoying/benefiting from a gift.
