What American accent do you have?

Your Result: The Midland

“You have a Midland accent” is just another way of saying “you don’t have an accent.” You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

Makes sense. I’m a Northern Californian, and we don’t have accents…

  1. But it’s a very distinguished accent. Thanks, Jenny. Probably everyone has an accent, it just doesn’t sound that way to them.

  2. Actually, Kevin, you do have an accent. I grew up in Hayward (but live in Iowa now!). When I walked into my first college linguistics class, the prof had all the students tell a little about themselves without any information identifying where they grew up. He then pointed to each one in turn and identified where they were from. When he got to me, he said, “You’re from California. In fact, you are from the Bay Area.” Turns out, it was my rounded vowels that gave me away. It’s very unique to the SF region.

BTW, my area of expertise is languages. I recently got my master’s degree in linguistics from Iowa State. When I’m not figure skating (my “it’s cheaper-than-therapy” activity), I teach foreign languages at a small Christian high school in Ames.

  3. Thanks for the link! I just love those silly quizzes…

    Have a great Thanksgiving, Kevin.
