This Church Will Scare the Hell Out of You

The Contra Costa Times ran an article last weekend about “Hell House” ministries. Apparently, your church can purchase an outreach kit that depicts scenes such as date rape, abortions, gay marriage, suicides, drug abuse, and … well, you get the idea.

This is the brainchild of an Assembly of God pastor named Keenan Roberts from Denver. First, I’ve got to acknowledge that I’m sure that the churches that do this sort of thing have their hearts in the right place. But I just think that this is the sort of thing that makes people think that Christians are a bunch of wackos.

The article includes some criticism from church leaders. However, they seem to be fairly liberal types who would have a problem with the idea of sin and hell, anyway. Halloween is a time when people tend to look at “scary” things as entertainment. This whole thing sounds so campy to me that it’s hard to believe that anyone takes it seriously aside from the well-meaning Christians putting on the show.

For me, I’m going to be happy taking my Batman, Wonder Woman, and Baby Sleeping Beauty to the harvest festival at my church where they can laugh and eat candy and take part in a fun, positive outreach to the community.

What do you think?
