Be nice to me – I gave blood today…

I donated blood today. It’s a simple, honorable thing to do, but I’ve never done it before. It took about an hour of my time and it can save lives. Yet I’ve never done it. I’m a little squeamish when it comes to needles. It’s always just seemed like a good idea to keep my blood inside of me.

But as a Christian shouldn’t I be the first in line when there is an opportunity to help my fellow man? Yet there remains a selfishness in me that I would rather not admit or even notice. I’ve been convicted of that more and more. And I think that we in the conservative, evangelical church (myself as much as any) can do a better job in this area.

I don’t just mean giving blood. That’s easy. There are real, tangible ways that we can find to reach out to the less fortunate, and we should expend more effort doing so. It seems to me that the liberal church is doing a better job than we are. I hope to make this the subject of a future posting, but for now I will continue to consider my attitude and pray that God will give me a heart that aches with the pain of the suffering.
