Why do we pray?

It’s often a difficult question for me. Why do I, or more accurately, why should I pray? Were I an open theist, the answer would be quite simple. I would be trying to convince God to do something that I wanted Him to do. To make a decision based on some information that I was bringing to Him. Perhaps to change His mind about something.

However, being strongly convinced of God’s sovereignty, the question is a little more difficult. There is a simple answer, God commands us to pray. But that has never quite satisified me. John Piper has an excellent article on Prayer and the Sovereignty of God that helped me struggle through this question.
